What is the opposite of pay it forward?
For anyone who hasn’t seen the Haley Joel Osmond movie. Pay It Forward, is a movement where you do three difficult good deeds to three people who need your help. The only thing you ask in return is that each person continue the chain by doing three good deeds for three more strangers. It is a sort of save the world pyramid scheme. Of course the first thing we wonder is – “what’s the opposite”? We’ve gotten a couple suggestions, 1) pay back, 2) pass the buck, 3) comeuppance – but none of them really have the same strength in the negative direction as pay it forward does in the positive. Any ideas?

I have no idea what the opposite would be, but why? Why are you trying to figure it out in the first place?
That was my question, too, why negative backwards?
Speaking of paying it forward, my son who is in high school, he and his friends and others at the high school, have been fruiting it forward with actual fruit. The kids and teachers have been passing out fruit and if you get a piece you have to bring in three the next day to pass out. Funny idea, eh?
How about still using the pay it forward system? Only instead, do something like beat somebody up and then tell your poor victim to go beat up 3 people. (you could also threaten them with more punches if they don’t “pay it forward”
).
as a side note, I thought the pay it forward movie was great.
hoard it and keep it for yourself! i was thinking about this recently too!
the movie made me cry. of course, i cry at every movie. and i don’t know about ‘difficult’ but more like… something the person you were helping really couldn’t do for themselves. i loved how the whole circle went ’round but hated the ending. i should go watch that again…

^_^ Perverse curiosity. We’re engineers – we like logic puzzles. Would the opposite be something that starts with lots of people, and slowly focuses down on a single person? Or would it simply be like WANDERLUSTchild suggested and you do something mean to three random people? Or would it have to be a singular self ending act, because pay it fwd effects multiple people and is self sustaining?

@joseph - i don’t see why not, at that point he’d already made a large impact on the world or was starting to and such. his death, if i were around, would have made me cynical and angry and turn myself inwards and be all, wtf, here this kid does something amazing and he’s rewarded by being stabbed by a bunch of a-holes. ya know?
