New Feature: Comment Replies on Pulse
Just finished themifying the pulse item page, which means comment replies on pulse! A couple of things to note.
You can only reply to one person, per comment you post. This all builds on the theory that pulses should be as minimal as possible. (You start adding too many features, and your pulse just becomes a sad little weblog. O_O)
I know lots of you have been asking for automatic conversion of URLs into links – unfortunately I didn’t get around to rolling that feature out. It’ll be in the works, but probably at a later date.
The maximum length of a pulse depends on how long your username is. (and in the pulse universe, comments ARE pulses) The longer your username, the less space you’ll have available for other text. This is all tied directly to the maximum length of a text message. The entire pulse + username + other stuff has to fit into the text message, so if we didn’t limit the size of your message, it would be cut off when you get the pulse on your cellphone.
Alrighty, thats all! Play around with your pulse and let me know if you’ve got any weird issues or bugs k? Over and out!

Thank you, thank you so much! I was about to recommend adding a replied button on pulse but, you beat me to it. There is one more than about pulse I wanted to change. Can you give us credit when we use pulse?
@findingliberty - we’re looking into good ways of doing just that.
great work – but yeah, let’s give clickable links some love next
Oh, this is cool! I think the pulse-reply feature is a good idea. And I’m totally on board for getting credits for a pulse. Thanks for the update!
Good! Finally…I wanted this feature, woohoo! Thanks. =)
Mine’s not working. I click on reply and…nuttin’.
Awesome!
Xo
Can’t wait to check it out!
Thanks for working to make Xanga even more fun!
be proud!
now, go eat something
Thanks :]
lol oh yeah sorry I’m on my most recent xanga..you commented on my old one (dashboard_fan15)..
Hey! is there anyway you can allow us to customize our homepage? I’d like to do some thing with it.
@Evowookiee - what do you mean? Your private home, or your public home?
@CynaraJane - oh? what browser/os are you using?
@beyond_peripheral_vision - did you make that cartoon yourself?
My private home. I’d like to color it a bit, perhaps move the modules around to look all spiffy.
@joseph - Firefox 2.0.0.13…lemme try IE and Safari and I’ll get right back to you.
Nothing…it doesn’t work for me on IE or Safari, either. :sswhimper:
:ssstar:Oh wonderful:sssmile:so this means we will ‘see’ the reply in our feedback list, right? Thankyou…great work as always Joseph** take good care..Lee :ssstar:
no i didnt…i just happened to find it…likee i had that xanga..what 3 or 4 yrs ago…
oh dear. I just went to your page, and my debugger tossed up a bunch of errors. It seems that reply doesn’t play well with your custom javascript for super smileys. (yes I know its the same javascript that I have, but mine in unrestricted) I’ll have a talk with Adam about this in the AM, and see if we can’t get it fixed.
@CynaraJane - in the mean time, can you remove the super smileys code from your page and check to see if that fixes it?
@joseph - yes, I’ll try that in a few and let you know the results. Thanks!
Alright…removing the SuperSmileys enables me to reply within Pulse now. But, I still want my SuperSmileys. *sigh* I have had so many issues with these javascripts (ask John, I’m sure he’s probably getting rather tired of my moaning about it – but he’s so nice about it – bless him!).
I’m putting my SuperSmileys back now. I’d rather have them than this feature at the moment.
@CynaraJane - no problems. I just wanted to verify my theory. I’ll see what we can do about fixing it.
@joseph - Thank you, Joseph. I hate being such a pain in the a$$ is all. I feel like I’m too much of a squeaky wheel…heh. I don’t have the original SuperSmiley code, either, if that makes a difference. Mine quit working because of a change made on the backend there at Xanga (frontend? whatever, lol), so John had someone rewrite it so it would work. I don’t know if that matters, but I thought I’d mention it.
nice one:ssalien:
thanks for that feature addition!
that last bit about the username length was informative! good to know. i had been wondering why the character counts varied from people to people, so thanks.
w00t, great feature! Glad to see it.
 awesome…
Have you completely nixed embedding code in regular comments?
sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hey, nice job eating all that super spicy curry…I’m surprised it didn’t make you run around shooting fire everywhere.
@CareyGLY - no. You can still put simple HTML in your weblog / photo / video comments.
@booyahman - Booyah!
@joseph - I know that! I’m thinking less simple. i.e. music, and videos. You may not want to go down that road. I was just curious.
@CareyGLY - we have to be really careful with what stuff we let people post in comments. That space doesn’t belong to commenter, but to the person who owns the page. I know I’d be angry if someone posted music on my page. Additionally – allowing media/html that can’t be verified by us creates some serious security and age verification issues that can’t be easily addressed by us.
@joseph - Yeah, I guess you can’t count on everyone using it resposibly. It gets a little out of hand on Facebook and MySpace. Thanks
@Evowookiee - I dunno if there is anything like that in the works. Shoot an e-mail to one of the product folks (ben, ayca, john, marc, chris) they may be able to tell you more, or get something like that rolling.
Very nice job Joe.
I’m happy with the format. What would make it great is if we could get credits for pulse, video, audio and photo comments.

@CynaraJane -
I’ve figured out the source of the problem. Hopefully I can have it fixed something in the next couple weeks (I’m in the middle of a project right now) Sorry for all the trouble!
@MinisTestPage - No worries! Glad you have it figured out. Get to it when you are able, and thank you for your time already.
